Halloween is just around the corner and decorating your house is becoming much more common in the UK. Whether you’re adding some spooky touches to the outside to impress the local trick or treaters, or you’re planning a Halloween party, there are plenty of ways that you can transform your home.
Even better, a lot of decorations can be created easily and don’t require specialist equipment to put up. Sometimes simple spooky is the best option and creates an effective look that adds to the atmosphere of the day.
Here are some great ways to make your home a bit spookier this Halloween.

A garden graveyard
If you want a quick and easy way to decorate that requires minimal clean-up, a garden graveyard could be just the thing. You can buy fake tombstones or make your own using cardboard or polystyrene with a bit of paint.
Position the gravestones around the garden using garden stakes (which will secure them without damaging your lawn). Bonus points for adding outside lights to backlight the stones and a few skeleton hands and arms crawling from the graves.

Creepy ghosts
There are loads of different ways that you can create creepy ghosts outside your house and all of them look great – either with other decorations or as stand-alone displays.
You can create easily ghosts by covering balloons or light footballs with layers of white fabric and tulle. Add a tie around the fabric at the base of the ball or balloon to keep it in place and form the ghost’s head. You can then hang the ghost outside your house or, if you have a tree in your garden, hang several from the branches for a really eerie effect.
Another option is to use chicken wire to create a ghostly shape (make sure you wear thick gloves while doing this as the wire can be sharp when cut. Once in the perfect shape, spray the chicken wire with glow in the dark paint and use tent pegs to secure your ghosts without damaging your lawn.
If you want a simpler option, why not grab yourself some light-up ghost path markers? The battery-powered lights can be put wherever you want them in the garden and add a quick and easy spooky touch for those who are strapped for time or don’t have the DIY bug.

Pumpkin display
Is it really Halloween without pumpkins? You can add some simply autumn flair with your chosen level of spookiness by creating a display with pumpkins near your front door. Even better, you don’t even need to carve any to create a great effect – which also means you can enjoy cooking the pumpkins once Halloween is over!
Simply stack up different types and sizes of pumpkins to create an attractive display. You can intersperse autumn leaf garlands, lights and some jack O’lanterns (fake or real), skulls and spider webs as well to make the display even more effective.
The best part about this type of display is that you can add almost anything to it and it can be as subtle or over the top as you like. It’s also a great one for kids to get involved in if you do want to carve or paint some pumpkins.

Skeleton party
If you just happen to have a selection of fake skeletons – or were looking for the perfect reason to invest in a few – creating a skeleton party could be the perfect way to celebrate Halloween.
All you have to do is set your skeletons up to make it look like they are doing something. They could be chilling on your garden furniture, having a party, barbecuing, even decorating the house for Halloween.
Just be sure to add lights so people can see your skeletons in all their bony glory and really appreciate your display.

Spooky spiders
If you want to make the whole exterior of your house look creepy, spider webs and spiders can do the trick. You can get fake spider webs or make your own out of string, cotton or white netting, which can then be stretched across sections of your house.
This looks spooky enough – especially if you combine the spider webs with backlighting – but you can take it to the next level by also adding a giant spider or two. These can be positioned wherever is easiest, so if you don’t fancy hopping on a ladder, you’ll still create a great effect by putting your spider up near the front door.
Go all out
If you want to create a super spooky house or you simply can’t decide which idea you like the best, why not go all out?
Pick and choose which ideas you like the most to create a great scary effect for Halloween. Just remember that less is usually more, so spacing out your decorations will stop them from looking crowded and will add different layers to your display.
